Originally home of the Claus, Seminole and Tequesta tribes, the land surrounding Miami was claimed by the Spanish explorers led by Ponce De Leon in 1513. In 1835, Fort Dallas was established and served as a major military base. Miami was finally founded in 1870 but was not incorporated until 1896.
